From Raval to the dream of the Pere Barnés Residence

Arrels’ project started developing in 1986; at this time, there were practically no services devoted to attend homeless people. By 1991 the day centre, equipped with locker and showers, the street outreach team, the hospital visits team and the Shelter, a night accommodation centre, were all up and running. At this time land was bought where years later the the residential home Pere Barnés would be built, and in 1994 we moved on to Riereta street, which was much bigger to offer services to the people that used to come to the day centre.

The entity grows and we constitute ourselves as a foundation

1997 to 2001 was a period of growth for Arrels. In 1998 Arrels established itself as an entity, since, until then, it had been operating under the coverage of Sant Pere Claver foundation. During the first years of the 2000 decade, Arrels offered housing to 80 people. The public acknowledgement came in this period, with various awards being won. However, the most important success arrived in 2007 with the inauguration of the Pere Barnés Residence, a temporary housing facility for homeless people, with 30 places and 4 more for emergency situations.

Today, we get to more people, in a more stable way

These last years, Arrels has increased the attention to homeless people and, with the running of Pere Barnés Residence, it started a commitment to offer more stable housing. During this time, we have reinforced the attention to homeless people; we have increased the number of places in flats and the number of rented rooms and we have worked to ensure a stable and continued housing for the people.
